Temples : An adoring culture of Kerala

What I adore in South Indian culture are the temples .

I specifically acknowledge the Kerala temples .

We live in Palakkad district of Kerala. And it’s topography is defined with hills and mountainous features covering the major part of land with trees and sceanic beauty.

The above picture is one of the temple near my abode.

Kerala temples has this spiritual breathtaking ambience surrounded with scenic beauty that brings in a divine atmosphere comforting the soul of every devotee.

The structural designs of roof tiles and wooden walls and carvings will give those feels of an 18th century built.

This is the surrounding covering the temple area . One of the oldest temples situated in the midst of lush green environment.

In the above picture you can see a beautiful temple pond and that’s my little lady mesmerised with the surrounding.

Temple ponds or kulam ( in Malayalam ) is found in the vicinity of the temple . Mostly reserved for the priests to take a bath before entering the temple.

The priests in these temples are strict and disciplined . Pujas and offerings from devotees are accepted only during special hours.

One time I woke up at 8:00 am and got ready to visit a nearby temple. But it seems I was late and the inside door where the deity is resting was closed.

So if you want to visit a temple in Kerala , get up early by 5:00 am .

The prasadam and payasam / steaming unniappams are offered after a special Pooja is conducted . So patiently wait for the Pooja to end and savour those Prasads.

The Prasad is given on a banana leaf by the priests.

Do remember my above post while you visit one .

A simple Resam recipe.

I would love to share my favourite and most requested curry preparation , Resam.

Moreover having Resam is good for digestion.

Self care a must for Moms of little ones.

Being a Mom , a full time mom isn’t a piece of cake.

You forget your best sleep , your best hairstyle , your beauty routine and dietary plans if any .

You sacrifice your self care routine only and only for your little one.

But at the end of the day , when you realize your tired face and bad nails dosen’t look good at all.

First step , I prefer to find myself some time while my baby is taking a nap.

This time is for you mothers!

Some down below are my piece of advice to full time mom.

  • Never have your nails unshaped as well your nail polish half painted . Try to clean and moisturize your feet and hand and make it look pretty with beautiful nail colours.
  • You are definitely being judged when you go out . Hence never miss to take care of your face . Go! Get some glow . Find some natural beauty tips for a facial and hit to a nearby parlor.
  • If you need some coffee or tea don’t miss that . Make some and enjoy watching your favourite TV series when you find time . Don’t get busy with other household stuff. C’mon just an hour .
  • Sleep if you are tired with your little one.
  • Take a walk in the park with your baby .

I have always skipped some of my self-care routine and instead ran to the kitchen or any other household stuff that was pending .

And eventually I realized that these duties are neverending and will finish anyhow but what you need is giving yourself peace , self-care .

So go ahead Moms and find your worth .

Lebanon : God’s own world ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ง

Now this blog is all about exploring a very interesting economy .

Lebanon!

This is only Arab country that has a topography having lush green mountains and hills that would break every stereotype image about a Middle East country .

No this place is no desert , nor camels grazing or Arab men with white robe roaming !

The Lebanese platter for breakfast

A Lebanese cuisine will often have more of fruits and veggies.

The food is a mixture of French and Arab cuisine .

Beirut being the capital of Lebanon and one of the most populated area has the best tourists spot that would impress a tourist with it’s Roman culture and style.

This statue is in the memory of of Lebanon and Arab nationalists who spoke against the ruler of Ottoman military ruler.

The statue was damaged during civil war.

You can see gunshots on the statue and half dismantled which are restored intentionally as a mark of civil war.

The above pictures are Roman baths.

This is a Roman bathhouse that was a meeting place for all citizens .

Got to know that Beirut, Lebanon is one of the most populated shopping destination.

The Parliament .

Despite a severe damage happened during the civil war (1975-1990) that left Lebanon in ruins , this country still attracts the best tourist spots of world history with traces of Roman , Greek , Arab culture and architecture.

Does your baby loves mobile more than a toy ?

While our babies are busy with their own world of toys , we parents hop into our mobile phones and get busy with it.

How many of us as parents has or are currently following this trend ?

I shamelessly accept this that I am a culprit.

No wonder why my child is amazed when she gets a mobile phone in hand . She reacts with so much of enthusiasm once this device is caught hold by her.

Sometimes she overlooks her colourful exciting toys nearby and run to fetch the mobile phones that’s in our hand .

Ever since I realized this , mobiles are always kept out of reach from her eyes.

Once she was crying out loud while we were watching a movie from IPad and she needed that . She wanted to grab that . We tried to calm her down by placing some entertaining toys infront of her but her eyes were stuck on those moving images on iPad.

Finally we wrapped up our movie time session , closed the iPad and kept underneath the cushion. She cried for sometime but afterwards calmed down and went off to sleep.

I was a little concerned.

Not long before , I met a family who is struggling to upbring their daughter into a normal life as other children.

I met this kid who was just 5 year old. She behaved a little odd . She finds it difficult to interact with people , her own parents .

Why?

Because this little girl was entertained with mobiles , it’s videos and nothing else in the world. She got so engrossed that her behavior pattern got abrupted as she grew.

As other normal 5 year old children, this girl didn’t reply properly to what asked . In return mumbles something by herself .

And this really made me worry as a parent.

My suggestions for avoiding such a worst scenario consequence

  • Find time to sit besides your baby and play with them . Meanwhile giving lessons on different colors of the toy or animal names.
  • Say no to mobile phones while you are busy playing with your child.
  • Interacting with them more often as you interact with your spouse or any elder. Though they won’t understand but would definitely start speaking as soon as they hit the right age.
  • Never leave your child unattended with a mobile in hand . Some parents find this as an easier option to calm a wailing baby by giving their mobile phones.

Remember , the proper growth and development of your child is every parents responsibility .

Aren’t Medu vada’s a good choice with ‘Chai’?

I had a sudden urge from my taste buds within to make something extra with a steaming hot “Chai” or as we call Tea.

I usually prepare some interesting recipes that go well with Tea during evening.

And for my husband who comes home after a tiresome 12 hr shift , evening snack is a must.

So thought of sharing one of the recipes what meant to be a must try as I found all the ingredient available in my kitchen.

Meanwhile my little one was taking a nap , I grabbed this opportunity to get busy with the preparations in kitchen.

Medu Vada !

I soaked urad dal in water for 3 hrs.

Grinded urad dal forming a thick paste without adding water.
Getting ready with other ingredients to be mixed in the Medu Vada batter.

  • Black pepper
  • Green chilly
  • Onions
  • Curry leaves.

And there goes my first Vada into the hot oil .
Make sure the oil is not too hot otherwise Vada’s won’t cook well from inside and becomes brownish from outside.

There goes coconut chutney , hot cup of tea with the Vada’s .

And the crispy vadas ended up with some good conversation and messed up kitchen.

Note : Grind more if you need a smooth batter.

This happens to be my first successful try and will get into more of such “craved forever” Indian recipes that will be shared soon in my blog ๐Ÿ˜€

Spy camera app for my baby !

Spying your baby ? Really !

Yes you heard that right . I spy my sleeping baby.

There comes a solution when the worst scenario happens.

And the scenario being , my baby fell off from the bed.

No ! Fortunately she was fine . She didn’t get bruises either but what if ? Sounds worst huh.

Hey ! Before you start judging me as a bad parent or tag me to be a “bad mother” , be considerate enough to know my plight on that day.

I had to make her sleep soon and let her sleep on the bed such that I could finish some of my pending kitchen works.

Nope ! I didn’t leave the sleeping baby alone. I made a boundary around her , she was surrounded with big large cushions .

Cushions so heavy that is incapable for a 6-7 month old baby to lift up and drag to the floors .

So no chance and that’s what I thought . Unfortunately!

She came out to be strong . Stronger than her 6-7 month old toddler.

Proud as a Mom ! Am doing well as a mother. Isn’t it ?

But of course not so at that moment when she hit the floor for the first time.

After this incident , I am definitely not going to leave my baby alone . But what about my household duties.

My husband is in a 12 hr shift . He definitely won’t be there half of the day.

There were 2 solutions , I found .

One , make her sleep down the floor , on a bed cushion .

Second , a spy camera.

I somewhere read in Quora about this app.

This is Alfred camera App https://alfred.camera/ .

I downloaded it t from Playstore

Now how this works.

I download the app in 2 of my devices . One can be a spare one as well and other your personal mobile.

I download it in my I pad and switched on the app camera facing my sleeping baby.

On the other side , I had it on my mobile as well.

I switched on this app camera that was connected to the iPad.

And I rested my mobile on the kitchen tiles, observing her every movement as well as doing my kitchen work.

Now I could spy her from the kitchen ๐Ÿ˜‚.

Super Mom , huh!?

Well this definitely is a version of modern parenting techniques.

A Keralite naming ceremony !

Kerala follow this beautiful tradition of naming ceremony of the new born according to a Hindu ritual.

When a child completes 28 days from birth , this day highlights some auspicious events followed by naming of the new born.

A proper traditional set up is organized by the family .

The day he/she completes 28 days , the child’s parents , grandparents adorn her with gold jewellery . A tiny pair of earrings and necklace purchased by her loved ones are first displayed on the banana leaf .

The first ritual that takes place is the naming ceremony .

I had never witnessed a single naming ceremony before and happened to be the most cherished moment as a mother taking part in my daughter’s naming ceremony.

The father of the baby goes first . With a betal leaf , he is required to close the left ear of the baby and whisper the pre decided name of the baby 3 times near the child’s right ear audible enough to the audience.

And then betal leaf is held to the child’s right ear and whisper again the name 3 times through the left ear.

Followed by the child’s uncle , mother and grandparents , the baby’s name is hence decided.

My daughter was donned with some gold jewellery and new clothes . A black thread is tied across her waist and a black dot is put on her face to ward off an evil eye.

And then came the most emotional and soul wrenching part of the day .

Ear boring ceremony!

As a mom it was difficult to see my child crying in pain during ear piercing.

I could’nt control my tears for long and I cried .

It took just minutes to finish though and was done beautifully and very neatly with expert care by the goldsmilth who pierced with his traditional tools and it was not a gunshot ( a modern technique nowadays)

Soon after this , I immediately calmed her down and she dozed off to sleep for some hours.

All this went very well and organized .

Meals known as Sandhya was organized by our family .

With many blessings and gift showered on our baby , many of our relatives left one by one. And that ended with good and positive vibes .

Coming to the name of my baby , we named her Kalyani.

Baby food : Introduction to solid food for a 6 month and above babies

New Moms are always in a dilemma once they start introducing solids for their baby . Different opinions , advices turn out to be very frustrating as well when deciding on what and what not to feed your baby .

And hence itโ€™s been a random thought of posting some very essential content that every new Momโ€™s prefer to google.

This blog is all about baby food , what I feed her in portions and the timings.

Solid food were introduced to my baby only after she turned 6 month.

Ragi Porridge

Before leaving to abroad I packed a powdered 3kg ragi powder and now on daily basis , my baby is fed with this nutritious food .

Ragi helps in gaining weight , nutritious with lots of health benefits that would definitely be a No. 1 option for a Mom out there.

Ingredients

Ragi powder

Water

Palm sugar ( for taste)

Milk ( small amount )

Before using the stove , stir the powdered Ragi in 2 cups of water . Stir well such that there is no lumps and then start the heating process.

Keeping stirring for 5 minutes .

In between add some palm sugar for taste ( in preference) and mik in little amount .

Continuous stirring will not form lumps and then the content becomes a little thick .

I prefer to feed my baby in a little liquid form and not much thick.

Do try to feed this powdered Ragi to your baby as a part of her daily meal. Especially if you are concerned with your baby low weight .

Cerelac.

I started with the idea of feeding her as a supplement to breast milk .

This definitely is a life saver for the mommyโ€™s while you are travelling . I prefer to pack this item evrytime I am on a long trip with my baby and is an instant food available at the moment .

Cerelac comes with different ingredients.

Rice and wheat being the main . They are even added fruits in bites for childeren above 8 months. My first cerelac feed for my baby was wheat and dates combination that I started when she turned 7 months .

In my personal view , wheat and dates is her favourite amongst the cerelac family.

Introducing Rice and yogurt .

In her daily meal requirements , I prefer to add some more of calcium .

I learnt the idea mixing yogurt and white rice from my own mother . She finds it traditional and one of my favourite too .

We can even opt for cheese for babies and found a simple cheddar cheese in market from one of the known brands.

Other baby meals

  • Dal and white rice with some mashed potato or carrot
  • Sweet potato mashed up.
  • Broccolli and carrot steamed and mashed.

Fruits.

Fruits are nutrient and fibre enriched that definitely a need for your growing baby.

Banana , kiwi , plums , apples are a healthy supplement for your baby .

I start with Ragi porridge as her morning meal then followed by some white rice /yogurt mix in the afternoon and some steamed vegetables for dinner .

Breastfeeding her in between the meals is always on priority .

As an evening snack , I feed her with some mashed kiwi or plum that she happily enjoys while we elders sip a cup of hot and steamed tea.

Do try the above listed baby foods and feel free to share your views in the comment section.x
